Monday Miscellany: Strawberries, Succulents, Fellini Baby and Energy-Efficient Landscaping

Loads of cool stuff kicking around the internet this week, from ideas of what to do with all your excess strawberries, how to create your own succulent container design, to some great podcast interviews.

DIY Strawberry Jam – with Balsamic Vinegar and Black Pepper!

Stevie over at Garden Therapy has a fantastic tutorial for those of us with an abundance of strawberries: strawberry jam made two ways! Original, and Black Pepper Balsamic Strawberry Jam.

I am so taken with the idea of balsamic and strawberries… I’m wondering if I could make that jam into a glaze for veggies or meat, or shake it into a summer cocktail of some kind? I love creative food…

How to Pot Up Your Own Succulent Container Planting

Debra Baldwin, author of Succulent Container Gardens, has put up a great video showing how to create your own succulent container planting. She covers how to make your potting soil into a good mix for succulents, a few ways you can design a succulent container planting, and walks you through all the steps in potting one up.

Fellini Baby – a Humboldt County Local Who’s Making Organic, Fair-Trade Baby Gear

I wanted to give a shout-out to Catherine Andrews, whose adorable, soft, NOT PINK baby clothes are rocking my world. Just got a paprika-colored onesie with a tree of life symbol on for a friend’s upcoming baby.

Since Catherine’s a Humboldt County local, I got together with her recently to do an interview in her garden about Fellini Baby and what makes her clothing special.

You can pick up Fellini Baby gear in my shop.

Energy-Efficient Landscaping and How to Compost Interviews

Carole over at Ecosystem Gardening has an audio interview up with Sue Reed, the author of Energy-Wise Landscape Design.

Carole’s been interviewing some wonderful folks about how to garden in a more eco way. She also recently interviewed Chris McLaughlin about how to compost effectively. Chris is the author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Composting.

I’ve got both interviews loaded up on my faux-pod for listening while weeding!

That’s it for this week, guys. Happy gardening!

  1. Hi Gen – thanks for the mention this wonderful Monday! The strawberry balsamic pepper jam would be great as a glaze on meat – it has a good balance of sweet, tart, and bite. I like it on crackers and brie too. Mmmmm. Now on to raspberries, blueberries, cherries, huckleberries,….

  2. Thanks for the shout-out Genevieve! It’s been a lot of fun doing those interviews. There’s so much great information out there by some wonderful authors. Stay tuned, more to come.

  3. Stevie, I can’t wait for the rest of your recipes to be posted. I just tried a blueberry habanero jam that is amazing!!!

Carole, thank YOU! It’s great to have new stuff to listen to while working.
